Fruit flies will enter a building through any small opening it can find to get to its next meal. This includes open doors and windows, doors with poor weather stripping, and tears in screen windows. Once inside they will find produce and lay eggs as the fruit or vegetable starts to rot. Each female fruit flies can lay up to 500 eggs at a time which results in a rapidly growing fruit fly infestation.
Fruit flies are most active whenever there is fruit around that is slowly ripening or decomposing. This means that outdoor fruit flies are most prevalent during summer and fall harvest seasons while indoor fruit flies are most active when grocery shopping has just been completed and fruits have recently been introduced into a home.
Fruit flies breed quickly, and their size makes it hard to notice a problem until it’s already a big issue. Like most flies, fruit flies develop through 4 stages. They start as eggs and then hatch into larvae before developing into their pupal stage. After they pupate, an adult fruit fly will emerge. The development stages typically take just a few days while adult fruit flies can survive for up to a month. By the time they reach adulthood they are ready to reproduce and lay a new batch of up to 500 eggs on rotting fruit.
