Bed bugs generally feed on humans at night and their bite is normally painless. That said, most people have an allergic reaction which causes large itchy welts to appear. • Wash and dry all clothing on high heat in addition to steaming bags used to transport luggage after travel. 
• Check hotels / motels / Airbnbs for bed bugs prior to sleeping.
• Never pick up free or discarded furniture of the street.
• Check any secondhand furniture, bedding, toys, stuffed animals, etc before introducing them into your home.

There are a few different methods of treatment that are effective in killing bed bugs instantly. Different chemical pesticides, extreme heat, and diluted rubbing alcohol kills bed bugs as soon as it makes contact. High heat and rubbing alcohol mixtures dissipate quickly which make them a safer alternative but professional help is still recommended to ensure complete eradication.

Washing all bedding, linens, curtains, and clothing from infested rooms using hot water and the highest heat dryer cycle is recommended to effectively kill bed bugs and eggs that are hiding. Then scrubbing down the mattress and mattress seams to remove bed bugs and their eggs before using a vacuum cleaner to clean your bed and surrounding areas is recommended in addition to getting professional help. In addition, there are mattress and pillowcases that are made specifically to trap any left over bed bugs so they cant feed and eventually starve.  

You can attempt DIY methods of bed bug removal but because they can hide almost anywhere and lie dormant without a meal for months, these pests are extremely difficult to exterminate.
